DALLAS — The Miami Marlins snagged another free-agent prize Wednesday, reaching a deal with four-time All-Star left-hander Mark Buehrle for $58 million over four years.
Manager Ozzie Guillen praised Buehrle at the winter meetings. They were together on the Chicago White Sox this season, and Guillen was eager to have the left-hander in 2012.
“This kid is special,” Guillen said. “He pitched in the big scenarios, big moments. When people love you in Chicago — that means something.”
The deal is subject to Buehrle passing a physical.
The Marlins have been the busiest team this week, spending $191 million on three free agents. They previously landed two All-Stars: shortstop Jose Reyes and right-handed closer Heath Bell.
Buehrle, 32, pitched more than 200 innings for the White Sox in each of his 11 full seasons, putting together a 161-119 record and 3.83 ERA, including a perfect game and no-hitter. He was 13-9 this year with a 3.59 ERA.
In his career against the Tigers, he was 18-10 with a 3.36.
Boston: David Ortiz accepted the club’s offer of arbitration. Though the acceptance guarantees Ortiz, 36, will return to the Red Sox for one more season, the designated hitter still hopes ro get a multiyear deal before arbitration ends in January.
N.Y. Mets: Outfielder Angel Pagan was traded to San Francisco for right-hander Ramon Ramirez and ex-Tigers outfielder Andres Torres. … Free-agent relievers Frank Francisco ($12 million, two years) and Jon Rauch ($3.5 million for one) signed. Both pitched in Toronto.
Pittsburgh: Left-hander Erik Bedard, outfielder Nate McLouth and minor league catcher Jose Morales signed free-agent contracts. McLouth, 30, spent four-plus seasons with the Pirates before being traded to Atlanta in 2009. The Whitehall High graduate hit .228 in 2011.
San Diego: Right-hander Huston Street, who had 29 saves in Colorado this year, was acquired for a player to be named.
