Rugby: SBW: No more boxing before World Cup
Breathe easy, rugby fans, Sonny Bill Williams is fine and he isn’t stepping back into the ring any time soon. “Rugby bro. Rugby, rugby, rugby,” was Williams’ reply when asked what was next on his agenda.
Rugby World Cup: Teams waiting in wings for dropouts
Uruguay, Tunisia and even Kazakhstan are lining up to replace any team that drops out of the Rugby World Cup. Any possibility that the Fijian team would miss the tournament because of New Zealand’s travel bans was dismissed yesterday by the Fiji Rugby Union and the International Rugby Board.
Rugby: Easing fears of All Black exodus
The good vibes that had been flowing out of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s HQ hit a speedbump this week, with confirmation that Mils Muliaina and Rodney So’oialo would bank their future rugby earnings as yen. But how sorely is New Zealand’s depth really being tested?
Rugby-Barnes plans to box clever to keep a clear head
SYDNEY, June 2 (Reuters) – Wallabies back Berrick Barnes wants to be allowed to wear a boxing-style helmet to protect himself against the concussions that have blighted his career. The versatile 25-year-old has missed two Super rugby games for the New South Wales Waratahs this season because of concussion and another with a migraine. Current International Rugby Board (IRB) laws allow approved headgear to be worn on the pitch but Barnes thinks that at a maximum of 1 cm thickness when compressed, they are too thin.

Rugby-Sonny Bill key to NZ rugby and must stay, coach says
WELLINGTON, May 24 (Reuters) – Sonny Bill Williams is as important to New Zealand rugby as Dan Carter and Richie McCaw and it is “critical” he stays in the country after the World Cup, Canterbury Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder said on Tuesday. League convert Williams has been in oustanding form at inside centre for the Crusaders this year in Super rugby but his contract expires at the end of the year with European union and Australian league clubs already showing interest. All Blacks flyhalf Carter’s new four-year deal with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU), signed last week, allows him to take a sabbatical during which he can have a spell playing overseas.

Award-winning baseball history
Last weekend, I was in Cleveland attending the Seymour Medal conference as the keynote speaker, but that’s less interesting than the conference, and particularly the raison d’etre for the event itself. The Seymour Medal, named for the eminent baseball historians Harold Seymour and Dorothy (Seymour) Mills, is awarded by the Society for American Baseball Research; it honors the best work of baseball history published in the previous calendar year. This year, SABR awarded the hardware to co-authors Lyle Spatz and Steve Steinberg for their book, 1921: The Yankees, The Giants, and the Battle for Baseball Supremacy in New York (University of Nebraska Press).
Rugby faces agent of change
Quade Cooper has inked a one-year deal to stay in Australian rugby. The future of Australian rugby’s golden boy lies in the hands of one of the country’s most controversial sports agents. Khoder Nasser – the man behind Anthony Mundine – may be an odd fit in rugby circles but Quade Cooper tells Phil Lutton it’s all a matter of trust ..
Leonard says in book he was abused by coach (AP)
NEW YORK – Sugar Ray Leonard says in his upcoming autobiography that he was sexually abused by a coach as a young boxer in the early 1970s. In “The Big Fight: My Life In and Out of the Ring,” the Hall of Famer writes than an unnamed “prominent Olympic boxing coach,” who has since died, assaulted him in a car in a deserted parking lot across the street from a rec center after praising his bright future
