Sharapova advances to Wimbledon semifinals (AP)
WIMBLEDON, England – Maria Sharapova looked like a champion under the Centre Court roof at Wimbledon, advancing to the semifinals at the All England Club for the first time since 2006 with a 6-1, 6-1 win Tuesday over Dominika Cibulkova. Sharapova, the only Wimbledon champion remaining in the women’s draw after the Williams sisters were eliminated a day earlier, won eight straight games to win the first set and take control of the second. The fifth-seeded Russian has not lost a set at this year’s tournament, and she was nowhere near losing one Tuesday.
Williams sisters out; big 4 men keep rolling (AP)
WIMBLEDON, England – After three of the biggest names in women’s tennis were sent home early, the big four in the men’s game kept on rolling in their chase for the Wimbledon title. A question mark, however, hangs over the fitness of defending champion Rafael Nadal, who injured his left foot and is unsure if he’ll be fit for Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Monday’s fourth-round matches — featuring the appearance of Prince William and new bride Kate in the Royal Box — produced a series of upsets in the women’s draw that knocked out the Williams sisters and top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki.

Worried Nadal to get MRI on injured left foot (AP)
WIMBLEDON, England – Rafael Nadal felt something “crush” in his left foot, and the intense pain immediately made him worry that it might be broken. And then, as he limped along between first-set points in the fourth round at Wimbledon, came an idea just as scary to contemplate: What if he needed to quit? “I thought I wouldn’t be able to continue playing,” the defending champion and top-seeded Nadal said Monday night

Defending champion and four-time winner Serena was the first to go, beaten 6-3, 7-6 (6) by Marion Bartoli of France, cutting short the American’s return to Grand Slam tennis after nearly a year out with serious health problems

By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Tennis Writer WIMBLEDON, England – About 18 months removed from his last Grand Slam championship, Roger Federer figures it’s about time for another — his record-tying seventh at Wimbledon. Despite nearly a year away from the game because of a series of health scares, Serena Williams warns that she “wouldn’t bet against” herself. And even though he’s yet to drop a set through three matches — something he’d never managed to do at the All England Club — Rafael Nadal keeps talking up his opponent’s chances.
Serena, other stars advance at Wimbledon (AP)
By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Tennis Writer WIMBLEDON, England – Serena Williams has been known to say she isn’t satisfied with this or that aspect of her game, even after easily winning a match, say, 6-3, 6-2. So it was somehow refreshing to hear Williams actually praise herself after a victory by that very score over 26th-seeded Maria Kirilenko at Wimbledon on Saturday.
Baseball’s demographics shift away from African Americans
Although he grew to be as tall as a power forward and as strong and fast as an All-Pro tight end, Dave Winfield was destined to be a baseball player. He even has a baseball date of birth.
